Abstraction method. What is it and how to understand it?

The method of abstraction - the process of moving away from the non-essentials of the phenomenon under study in order to concentrate on its main, essential features, to reveal their essence.

A situation every modern art lover can find themselves in: standing in front of a fascinating and captivating abstract painting and feeling absolutely nothing. Nothing but annoyance and a slight sadness - not because the painting makes you feel that way, but because your mind is spinning with thoughts of "what's painted here, and where should I look". Breathe out and try to answer a few questions: what do I see in front of me? What are the materials and when was it made? How do the shapes and lines I see play off each other? Is there a sense of depth? Next step: listen to yourself and try to identify what emotions are evoked by what you see. Answer the question: am I trying to figure out what it looks like, or am I letting my mind interact freely with colour and shape?

Remember, it's not just the picture that matters, but also the frame - or lack of it. The rejection of frames is a conscious choice by the artist, inviting you to reject old ideas about art and to expand its boundaries in your mind, literally.
